minutes down the paved path for a photo op with magnificent views looking back up at
the snaggle-toothed Koʻolau Range and out across the broad valley.
As you get back on the highway, it's easy to miss the signs near the parking lot exit,
and instinct could send you in the wrong direction. Go left toward Kailua or right toward
Honolulu. Several TheBus routes travel the Pali Hwy, but none stop at the lookout.
Maunawili Falls Trail HIKING
( http://hawaiitrails.ehawaii.gov ) Reaching a small waterfall alongside a muddy, mosquito-in-
fested stream, the 2.5-mile round-trip Maunawili Falls Trail is a family-friendly hike that
ascends and descends flights of wooden stairs and crosses Maunawili Stream several
times. This trail connects with the 10-mile Maunawili Trail , which gently contours
around ridges and valleys in the Koʻolau Range between the Pali Hwy and Waimanalo
town.
To reach the main Maunawili Falls trailhead, drive over the Pali Hwy from Honolulu,
then take the second right-hand exit onto Aʻuloa Rd. At the first fork veer left onto
Maunawili Rd, which ends in a residential subdivision. Look for a gated trailhead-access
road on the left; nonresidents may not drive or park along this road. Instead, park along
nearby residential streets that aren't gated. Respect local residents by not loitering or be-
ing noisy while walking along the road.

Waimanalo
POP 5450
The proudly Hawaiian community of Waimanalo sprawls alongside Oʻahu's longest
beach, where the white sands stretch for miles, within view of offshore islands and a cor-
al reef that keeps breaking waves at a comfortable distance. Small hillside farms in
'Nalo, as it's often called, grow many of the fresh leafy greens served in Honolulu's top
restaurants.
Beaches
As elsewhere at Oʻahu's beaches, don't leave any valuables in your car to avoid break-
ins and theft.
