Route 96 to the Damariscotta River. It has 2.35 miles of hiking trails and
650 feet of shore frontage. Some parking.

shore, through woods and fields. Operated by the Audubon Society. Free
parking are nearby Audubon camp. Located at end of Keene Neck Road

La Verna, Bristol . Rocky shoreline and long gravel beach are the prime
features of this 119-acre Nature Conservancy preserve. Dense forest
along with freshwater marsh bordering Muscongus Bay not far from
Pemaquid Lighthouse. Water access only. Contact the Conservancy office

Witch Island Preserve, Bristol . Small, 18-acre wooded island with
two beaches, a trail and ruins of a house. Easy quarter-mile paddle from
South Bristol town landing. Owned by Audubon Society.

Fernald's Neck Preserve, Camden . 315-acre forested peninsula in
Megunticook Lake just west of Camden. Nature Conservancy maintains

Merryspring Horticultural Nature Park, Camden . Located off
Conway Road, this nature 66-acre preserve is a favorite for hiking and
cross-country skiing. More than a dozen trails. Gazebo for picnics and lec-
tures. Open year-round during daylight hours.

Salt Bay Farm, Damariscotta . Home of the Damariscotta River Asso-
ciation, which manages numerous preserves and island in the area. Of-
fice in house. Maps and brochures available. 90 acres of fields, woods and
salt marsh with walking trails. On the Belvedere Road.

Nelson Nature Preserve, Friendship . Operated by Mid-Coast chap-
ter of the Audubon Society, this marsh and wooded preserve sports just
under four miles of hiking trails. Off Route 97. Scant parking.
St. Clair Preserve, Northport . 250-acre Nature Conservancy preserve
protecting most of the shoreline of pretty Knight's Pond. Ducktrap Moun-
tain on south shore. Not far from US 1. Conservancy office at 14 Maine
Street, Brunswick 04011.

Dodge Point, Newcastle . More than 500 acres of land with 8,000 feet of
shoreline along the wide Damariscotta River make up this recent addi-
tion to Maine's Public Reserve Lands. No facilities. No overnight use.
Many relatively easy trails criss-cross the property and offer access to the
shore. Great place to spend half a day or so. Parking area off the River
Road, just a few miles south of US 1.
