Josephine Newman Sanctuary, Georgetown . Trails and nature
walks through woods and along the shore. Good views of Sheepscot Bay
to the east. Off Route 127.
Pond Island National Wildlife Refuge, Popham Beach . Located
about 16 miles northeast of Portland, this treeless, 10-acre island sports
an automated lighthouse and fog signal. Water access only. Limited shel-
tered landing areas. Numerous nesting seabird colonies.

Armbrust Hill Wildlife Reservation, Vinalhaven . Small refuge near
town behind the medical center. Site of abandoned quarries. Small pond,
hiking trails, picnic area. Small parking area.
Osborn Finch Preserve, Waldoboro . A small, 11-acre preserve on the
bank of the Medomak River. Parking on Dutch Neck Road off Route 32.
Hiking trails lead to shore.
Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge, Penobscot Bay . Once used for
Navy gunnery practice, this 65-acre treeless island 21 miles south of
Rockland offers prime seabird nesting habitat. The island once harbored
a large puffin colony, but it was killed off by hunters by the late 1800s.
Administered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Tern, puffin and other
seabird restoration project underway in cooperation with Maine Audu-
bon and other agencies. Water access only. Shore access may be limited.

Natural Areas & Preserves
Damariscove Island, Boothbay . This 209-acre island is main-
tained by the Nature Conservancy. Located far offshore, it was
once used as a base for fishermen in the late 1600s. Long narrow
cleft in rock serves as rudimentary harbor. Caretakers present in season.
Visitors must avoid seabird nesting areas. Contact the Conservancy of-

Ovens Mouth Preserve, Boothbay . 146-acre parcel overseen by the
Boothbay Region Land Trust, which serve to protect scenic shoreline,
quiet coves and a salt marsh. It has 1.6 miles of trails on the east penin-
sula and 3.1 miles on the west peninsula. Trails do not connect. On Dover
Cross Road. Adequate parking. The trust also has several other smaller
preserves (under 25 acres) in the Boothbay Region.
