Rachel Carson Salt Pond, New Harbor . Salt marsh, pond and tidal
pool where famed environmental author Rachel Carson once came to
study marine life. 78 acres are now protected by the Nature Conservancy.
Along Route 32. Trail through fields and forest on mainland side of road

Morse Mountain Preserve, Phippsburg . 600-acre preserve off Route
216. Park near main road and walk private road through salt marsh,
woods to sandy beach and natural rock seawall.
Bradley Pond Preserve, Topsham . More than 160 acres of private
land are open to the public, thanks to the generosity of the owners. More
than two miles of nature trails wind through marshes, woods, fields and
by a pond. Please stay on trails. Adequate parking off the Bradley Pond
Road. Protected by the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust.

Areys Neck Woods, Vinalhaven . Nice moderate hike through spruce
woods along the shore, marsh. Scant parking at end of dirt road.
Big Garden Island Preserve, Vinalhaven . This 25-acre island was
given to the Nature Conservancy in the late 1960s by Charles and Anne
Morrow Lindbergh. Densely forested and accessible only by small craft.

Lane's Island Preserve, Vinalhaven . 43-acre Nature Conservancy
preserve on small island joined to Vinalhaven by a stone causeway. Rudi-
mentary trails. Good ocean views. Conservancy office at 14 Maine Street,

Meadow Mountain Preserve, Warren . 300-acre mountainside with
swamp and frontage on Quiggle Brook. Scant parking. Dirt access road
difficult to find. Take Upper Beachwood Street north off Route 90. Drive
1¼ miles and turn left on a dirt road. You'll reach the preserve after .75
miles.
Montsweag, Woolwich . Operated by the non-profit Chewonki Founda-
tion, this preserve protects woods and ledgy shoreline along a tidal creek
which runs into Montsweag Bay. Loop trail takes in highlights. Access by
land or by canoe/kayak. RR 2, Box 1200, Wiscasset 04578.

Robert Tristam Coffin Wildflower Sanctuary, Woolwich . Operated
by the New England Wildflower Society. 180-acre preserve off Route 128
with more than 200 species of trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses. Trails
follow shores of Merrymeeting Bay.
