Contemplating Cheaha Falls
At this point the trail moves away from the stream and begins a moderate as-
cent up the side of a hill to the top of the ridge. Depending on the season, you may
see wildflowers like spring beauty and downy rattlesnake plantain along the way.
At the top of the ridge, you will come to the Cheaha Falls Shelter. This is a spa-
cious and popular shelter that is first-come, first-served for overnight backpackers.
It's usually occupied, and when you pass through, take the time to chat with them.
Most love to talk about their backpacking adventures.
After passing the shelter you will come to Cheaha Falls, which is formed by the
churning waters of Cheaha Creek. The falls is a series of cascades with a nice pool
at the bottom. There used to be a bridge across the top of the falls, but Hurricane
Opal took care of that years ago, so if you cross the stream, use extreme caution.
The rocks are slippery, the falls high, and the water can be swift flowing. After
visiting the falls, it's time to turn around and head back to the trailhead.
