In-Depth Information
The full Chinnabee Silent Trail is actually 6 miles long (one way) from the re-
creation area to its terminus with the Pinhoti Trail near the Turnipseed parking
area on the Skyway Motorway. The easiest, and many say the best, way to experi-
ence the trail is to do it as a 5.4-mile out-and-back day hike which starts from the
lake and heads south to the Cheaha Falls Shelter and the shelter's namesake wa-
terfall before returning to the trailhead. And that's the trip described here.
The trail begins at the southern end of Lake Chinnabee and heads south follow-
ing the banks of Chinnabee Creek. Here you will find beautiful cascades several
tiers tall tumbling into a deep, cool pool. In the hot summer months, and with its
close proximity to a major recreation area, this location is teeming with people
swimming in the cold mountain stream.
The crowds thin out as you move away from the recreation area, where you find
yourself climbing up the side of a rock bluff on a series of wood and stone steps
and soon arrive high above an area called the Devil's Den. Far below, the waters
of Chinnabee Creek tumble white through the canyon over the rocks, a beautiful
sight from the platform.
