South Region Honorable Mentions
Cypress ponds and crystal-blue springs await the hiker in these lesser-traveled
hikes through South Alabama that didn't make our top list. As with other honorable
mention hikes in this topic, these treks are typically shorter, but there is plenty of
fantastic scenery and interesting wildlife to be seen. Pay a visit and let us know
what you think. Maybe a particular hike should be upgraded, or maybe you know
of some hidden trip that would make a great honorable mention.
D Frank Jackson State Park
The 2,050-acre Frank Jackson State Park is located in Opp, Alabama, 30 miles
north of Conecuh National Forest and only 10 miles east of Andalusia. In the center
of the park is a 1,000-acre stream-fed lake. While there is the standard fare of fish-
ing and swimming here, several very nice nature trails provide excellent hiking,
with one that takes you out onto a small island in the center of the lake.
An interesting time to visit is in the fall when the park hosts “Scarecrows in the
Park.” Over 300 unique scarecrows are displayed along the park's trails and bike
paths.

E Eufaula Wildlife Refuge Nature Trail
The Eufaula Wildlife Refuge along the banks of the Chattahoochee River that bor-
ders Alabama and Georgia is a wonderful spot to view the widest variety of wild-
life anywhere in the region. You can walk along the miles of dirt roads and berms
that border wetlands or take in the Nature Trail, an out-and-back hike totaling about
1.5 miles.
