In-Depth Information
This hike begins at the southwest end of the parking lot at the ranger station and
is clearly marked with a wooden sign. The trail is a dirt road for its entire length.
To the left are open fields used to produce hay for livestock. To the right, slash
and loblolly pines tower above the trail, with magnolias and oaks intermingled.
Along the trail many varieties of birds will be seen darting through the trees. In
the fields be sure to watch for white ospreys looking for dinner as they follow the
tractors cutting the hay.

F Geneva State Forest
Located just east of Conecuh National Forest in Geneva County is the 7,120-acre
Geneva State Forest. It is described as the perfect example of a multiple-use
forest, with wildlife management, forestry experimental work, and enhancement
of environmental quality working hand in hand. Centered in the forest is a
100-acre lake and recreation area. New hiking trails are currently being built in
the forest to enhance your visit, including the Lake Loop which is now open and,
as the name implies, circles the lake.
If you love bird watching, you're in good company. Groups such as the South
Alabama Birding Association frequent the forest to watch for birds that call these
woods home, including the rare red-cockaded woodpecker.
