In-Depth Information
Fire ants are ferocious little boogers that think that
anything within 2 feet of their mound is an enemy, and
they'll attack to defend their home. Their name is well
deserved. The bite is painful and, for people allergic to
it, can sometimes be fatal.
It's believed that fire ants first came to the United
States on a ship from South America that docked in
Mobile, Alabama, in the 1920s. Fire ants like to use
man-made roads for their travels. Road construction
loosens soils, and loose soil provides an excellent
base for fire ant travel. In the rapidly developing South,
finding new roads is no problem. So far, the fire ant has
spread to thirteen southeastern states.
