Power View
If you are looking to work with Visual Analytics, Power View is the way to go.
Power View provides for ad-hoc reporting. Ad-hoc reporting in Reporting Services
2012 enables data analysts, business decision makers, and information workers to
make interactive data exploration possible even if they do not understand where
the data is or how it is structured. The users can easily create and interact with views
of data from data models based on PowerPivot workbooks published to PowerPivot
Gallery or, tabular models deployed to SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services instances.
Power View is a browser-based Silverlight application and requires SharePoint 2010
to launch. Power View is a great replacement for the Report Model Project template
used in SQL Server Reporting Services 2008. This model project template is absent in
SSDT as it is deprecated, however, for backward compatibility SSDT can work with
legacy report models.
Power View has some great features summarized from the Microsoft documentation
( http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/power-view-explore-
visualize-and-present-your-data-HA102835634.aspx ):
• Power View report is always ready to be presented as it works off live data.
No need for a preview.
• Power View can be in reading mode and full-screen (such as videos),
made possible by taking away items not needed from screen area.
• It has the same look and feel of Microsoft Office for its menus.
• Power View reports are interactive with filtering and highlighting supported.
• The data for Power View comes from Tabular Model running in SQL Server
2012 Analysis Services Server (in this topic).
• Creating reports is a breeze. You can create a variety of visualization of
data very rapidly. All you need to know is dragging data fields to design
area and create tables/matrices; and with a click change them to charts.
• Reports can have a variety of chart types such as bar, line, and so on.
• Filtering can be for the entire view of visualization or can be for a section
of a visualization.
• Filtered data can be sorted as well. You can sort tables, matrices, charts,
and so on.
