In-Depth Information
• Reports can have multiple views all based on the same underlying
data model.
• Performance-wise Power View does a great job retrieving only data
needed for the visualization.
• Power View reports can be exported to Power Point with each view
becoming a Power Point slide and each slide interacting with Power
View. Power View reports can be published to SharePoint Server 2010.
Power View should be considered as an ad hoc reporting tool that complements
Report Builder and Report Designer and not a replacement.
Data Alerts
Data alerts, as the name implies, are alerts driven by data, that is, when the data on
a report changes. For example, if a change in the report data takes place, you get an
alert by an e-mail. There can be multiple recipients to this alert. The frequency of
these alerts is customizable.
This proactive feature is new in SQL Server 2012 but is
only possible when integrated with SharePoint.
Data Alerts are created by users.
Data Alert creator owns the Data Alert and no one else does.
Data Alert owners can view data alerts, modify, or delete them if necessary. After
you create a report, you identify the data of interest that you may want to monitor.
You also define a recurrence pattern for sending the Data Alert when the monitored
data changes to the recipients you designate. Once the definition of data to be alerted
is defined, alert service processing takes over and at scheduled times retrieves data
to compare with the definition, and based on pre-established rules an alert instance
is created that sends an alert message to e-mail recipients. The rules for sending out
alert check the data in the reports and send out alerts unlike alerts that are generated
when a document changes takes place.
Data Alert creation and alert functionality is clearly explained in this diagram from
Microsoft's documentation:
