CHAPTER 8
What's Next in 3D Postproduction
The conventional wisdom has always been that talkies evolved out of
silent i lms, but sound actually grew up alongside silents. The initially
half-witted hybrid thrived in spite of itself, expanding voraciously and
choking off the more fragile strain. Talkies were not an evolution but a
mutation, a different art form entirely…
—Scott Eyman, The Speed of Sound, Hollywood and the
Talkie Revolution, 1926-1930
8.1 Overview
Less than 100 years have passed since the advent of talkies in the early part
of the previous century. It may be helpful to compare Eyman's view of the
advent of recorded sound technology with the advent of digital 3D. Early
practitioners and technologists of both talkies and 3D aspired to present new
“lifelike” and “immersive” experiences to audiences. Perhaps the “mutation”
of 3D (whether natively shot or converted) will eventually thrive, expand,
and choke off its 2D counterpart. More likely 3D will simply become another
deliverable along with 2D. In short, 3D will be an option users choose based
on how they want to experience content and content-creators choose based
on the audience to which they want to appeal.
At the same time, 3D will continue to grow as a viable and low-risk option
for visual storytellers who need or want the immersive experience that good
3D can provide.
Every new imaging method and format presents a new production paradigm.
New production realities drive new techniques and tools. I believe that 3D
production will become increasingly mainstream among indie i lmmakers,
especially with the development of large auto-stereoscopic (i.e., glasses-
free) displays and venues. I believe further that 3D is a viable choice today
