In-Depth Information
away from Dredd in slow motion. We shot the door blowing
out as one element. We shot the bad guy as a green screen
element. We then shot the stuff in the middle ground as a green
screen element. Finally we shot a background plate that would be
attached to the middle ground plate. I chose a convergence for
how we wanted the shot to look and used that same convergence
on every layer. You might ask: Why didn't we just shoot everything
at the same time? The reason was that each layer was shot at a
different frame rate, so that things would be moving away from
Dredd at different speeds. Here's the best part: once we had shot
all of those elements on stage, the Q-Take operator did a rough
comp of all the elements in Q-Take on-set. So before we handed
those shots to visual effects, we had a very good idea that the
i nal shot would work. And when you see the i nal shot in the
movie with corrected color and visual effects, it is just stellar. Of
course Q-Take is also good for playing back lower-res versions of
shots in 3D to check to make sure you have the shot.”

7.4 Relationships to Other Workl ows
One way to think of 3D Visual Effects is as a collection of 3D workl ows:
managing, editorial, depth, geometry and color. The Visual Effects editorial team
determines which imagery requires visual effects work. The Visual Effects depth
team provides a context for the placing CG imagery in Z-Space. The Visual
Effects geometry team re-creates the geometry of the live action scene. Finally,
the Visual Effects color team determines the look and lighting of CG imagery to
match the live action scene. In some cases, Visual Effects teams may also need
to replicate the (imperfect) characteristics of L and/or R in order to make the
visual effects i t the “look and feel” of the corresponding live action imagery.
7.4.1 Managing
The managing team creates the Visual Effects workl ow along with all of the
other post workl ows. The managing team establishes the core specii cation
and formats for visual effects deliverables. It is also responsible for providing
3D expertise to the Visual Effects team and creating the core planning
document, the VFX Breakdown.
