7.3 Key Differences Between 2D and 3D
The most important differences in visual effects work in 3D compared to
2D are:
• the need to generate a second view of each CG element
• the need to account for the geometry and depth of a 3D scene
Clearly the biggest difference is the need to generate an additional view
for each element. Each of these elements needs to live convincingly in a
live-action scene, so it must take into account the geometry and depth of
the scene into which it is added. A CG element integrated into a live action
scene needs to share the look and feel of the non-CG elements in terms of
apparent roundness and position in Z-depth.
“On DREDD, visual effects supervisor Michael Elson and I agreed
that for any shots using plates or green screen, we set convergence
for each element in each layer. For example, when Dredd bursts
through the door into the Slo-Mo den, you see a near proi le of the
door bulging out in slow motion, then you see it breaking open
