Data as a Service (DaaS)
DaaS is based on the concept that data can be provided on demand to the user regardless
of geographic or organizational separation of provider and consumer. It is much akin to
SaaS. Service-oriented architecture (SOA) has made the platform carrying the data almost
irrelevant. DaaS was primarily used in web mashups, but it is now being utilized both com-
mercially and within organizations such as United Nations (UN).

Organizations have typically used data stored in a self-contained onsite repository for
which software was specifically developed to access and present the data. The result of this
paradigm is bundling both the data and the software needed to interpret it into a single
package. As a number of packages were made to suite different needs, enterprise applica-
tion integration (EAI) provided a way for much required interaction among the packages.
However, the EAI tools often encouraged vendor lock-in. The result of combined soft-
ware and data consumer packages along with required EAI middleware has increased the
amount of software organizations must manage and maintain. Cascading updates of all
required tools to conform to the latest data formats and data schemas makes it a more dif-
ficult and a time-consuming affair. DaaS addresses the need to allow for the separation of
data cost and usage from specific software or a specific platform. Table 12.4 lists a couple
of DaaS vendors and their solutions.
