Around Nadi
The area around Nadi offers access to Viti Levu's rural interior as well as the surfing breaks
of the nearby
Malolo Barrier Reef
; the latter can be sampled by staying at
Rendezvous Fiji
.
Inland, the flats of the Nadi River eventually yield to the alpine
Nausori Highlands
. North
towards Lautoka, the Queens Road passes the scenic
Sabeto River Valley
and
Vuda Point
.
A few kilometres further on, the busy industrial port of
Lautoka
offers good shopping and
access to the north coast. In the distance, the shapely
Koroyanitu National Park
beckons
through the haze.
Uciwai Hills and the Momi Guns
Twenty minutes' drive south of Nadi along the Queens Road is the turn-off to
Uciwai Hills
,
the closest spot on the mainland to the surfing breaks along the
Malolo
Barrier Reef. Just
before the turn-off for Momi Bay, a small track leads to the
Momi Guns
(daily 9am-5pm;
F$3; 997 1580), two six-inch World War II coastal artillery guns aimed at Navula Passage
in anticipation of Japanese invasion. The site is administered by the National Trust and has a
lovely view of the southern Mamanuca Islands.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE: UCIWAI HILLS AND THE MOMI GUNS
By taxi
Few buses run out here so your best bet is to take a taxi from Nadi (15min; F$15).
