TIP: See Getting Around in each island section for
local numbers of international companies and list-
ings for local rental agencies.
Taxis
Taxis are plentiful in tourist areas on all three islands. Fares
are not metered, but prices are fixed at government-
approved rates between many common destinations, such as
from the airport to major hotels. Each driver is supposed to
carry an official rate schedule, so ask to see it. If your destina-
tion isn't listed, negotiate a price before you get into a cab, and confirm
that the rate is quoted per trip, not per passenger.
Surcharges are added late in the evening and on Sundays and holidays.
There should not be additional charges for luggage, unless a bag is very
large or there are too many pieces to allow the trunk to close securely.
Do plan to tip extra if the driver helps you with your luggage, usually 50ยข
to $1 per bag, depending on the size and weight. Unless the driver over-
charges, is rude, or takes you out of your way, plan to add at least a 10% tip
to the fare. US dollars and local currency are accepted, but don't expect the
driver to have change for large bills.
TIP: Most drivers will not allow you to get into their
taxi wearing wet swimsuits, so make sure you're dry
and wearing some type of coverup.
