Getting Around
H otels do not operate shuttle service to and from the
ABCs' airports, but if you're on a charter flight or
package vacation, transfers to and from your hotel are of-
ten included. Taxis wait for arriving passengers just out-
side the terminal, and most car rental companies have
offices on the airport grounds.
Driving
Driving is on the right-hand side of the road, as
in the US and Canada.
International road signs are posted, along with
local
road
signs
written
in
Dutch
or
Papiamento.
Speed limits are set in kilometers at 40 (25 mph) in urban ar-
eas, and 60 (37 mph) in rural areas.
Most rental car speedometers register in kilometers.
Right turns are not allowed on red lights anywhere on the is-
lands.
If you plan to rent a car, you must present a valid international
permit or a valid license from the US, Canada, or Europe. Ei-
ther must have been held for a minimum of two years.
Plan to pay with a major credit card and ask before you leave
home about included insurance on rentals charged to the card.
If you pay cash, you will be required to leave a $500 deposit.
Age restrictions for renters vary somewhat among companies,
but in general, the minimum age is either 21 or 25 and the max-
imum age is 65 to 70. If you fall at either end of these age
groups, verify the company policy before you book a car.
Most gas stations close early in the evening, and few open on
Sunday.
Watch out for roaming goats, donkeys, bikers, and pedestrians.
Your rental car will have a ā€œVā€ on the license plate, so petty
thieves know who you are. Lock the doors and use any theft-
prevention device the rental company supplies.
