Slide Shows
As an alternative, many resorts host no-charge slide presentations by
local underwater photographers. Even experienced divers are amazed at
the variety of sea life and the vibrant colors captured on film. If you don't
dive or snorkel, these shows offer a fabulous opportunity to see what all
the excitement is about. If you have time for only one presentation, make it
Dee Scarr's Touch the Sea (see page 177).
TIP: Pick up free copies of Bonaire Holiday or
Bonaire Nights for current listings of island enter-
tainment.
In the unlikely event that you get bored with all things underwater, head
to one of the bars, dance clubs, or casinos. Some feature live entertain-
ment, and all are casual places to meet new people and mingle with the
locals.
Live Bands
Local musicians play regularly at bars and cafés, and for spe-
cial theme-night parties at the resorts. Currently, one of the
hottest entertainers is Ralph Moogie Stewart , a Floridian
who has performed on Bonaire since 1990; first with Larry
Sparky Thorne as the Kunuku Band, and more recently as a
solo act. Look for him at Captain Don's Habitat's Rum Runners Bar
(
717-8290), Buddy Dive Resort's Dock of the Bay Bar (
717-5080),
and Plaza Resort's Coconut Crash Bar (
717-2500). If you like what
you hear, take home his solo CD, Fire .
TIP: Find CDs by local musicians and bands at
Mundo Musical in Lourdes Mall, Kralendijk,
717-8174.
Popular bands include the 12-piece Glen i Su Gang (Glen and His Gang),
a group of regular working guys who hold down day jobs, but get together
to play folk-style music in the evening. They've been performing together
since 1998, and you may be able to catch them at Karel's Beach Bar
(
717-8434) on weekend nights. Tipico Bonairiano has been around
many years, and the band is still popular for its use of standard and
unusual instruments to produce original island music. It's a special treat
to see them perform with the local Kibrahacha Dancers on Wednesday
nights at the Plaza Resort's Caribbean Point ,
717-2500.
