Central System Installation
In this install option, the SAP central instance and database instance are installed on the
same host. This option is recommended for small installations and development and test
systems.
Distributed System Installation
In this install option, the SAP central instance and the database instance are installed on two
different hosts. This option is recommended for production systems.
High-Availability System Installation
In this install option, the SAP software is configured in a switchover group using high-avail-
ability software, such as Service Guard, provided by external vendors.
SAP Installation Options in NW 7.1-Based Systems
In NW 7.1-based installations, some of the terminology is changed. Otherwise, the installa-
tion options are more or less the same as in NW 7.0-based systems. The central system in-
stallation option is now called the standard system installation.
Standard System Installation
In this install option, the SAP central instance and database instance are installed on the
same host. This option is recommended for small installations and development and test
systems. The distributed and high-availability install options are the same as in NW
7.0-based installs.
SAP Single-, Dual-, and Separated Stack Installs
During the “define parameters” phase of the installation process, the system will present the
Software Units (Usage Types) selection screen. In this screen, single-stack, dual-stack and
separated single stack options can be chosen based on the SAP solution architecture. Some
SAP solutions are delivered on single-stack systems, some require a dual-stack system, and
some are recommended to be installed as separated single-stack systems.
Single-Stack Installation (Example: Portal Installation)
The SAP NetWeaver Portal is a good example of the single-stack install option. Usage types
AS Java, EP, and EP Core are chosen, as per Figure 6-3 .
