in the late Communist era, Pierrot remains an important fixture more than thirty years after
opening. The interior has an almost retro feel -with one eye on the 1980s perhaps - the walls
adorned with images of actors and musicians like De Niro and Depeche Mode. Alternatively
take a seat out in the handsome vaulted corridor, which leads through to a pretty garden ter-

ing the very ordinary location and occasionally muted atmosphere, this is undoubtedly one
of Budapest's finest restaurants. It's neither showy nor prohibitively expensive, and the small
menu, which changes regularly according to the whim of the chef, contains some wonder-
fully executed dishes; expect creations like glazed rabbit leg with veg ragout, scallop with
corn risotto and rice pudding with red-fruit ice cream. Mains 4000-5000Ft, but the portions
aren't that big, so it's worth going for a four-course menu for 9000Ft or even the eight-course
one for 13000Ft. Booking advised. Tues-Sat noon-3pm & 7-10pm.

maritime paraphernalia are strung along the walls in this enjoyable fish restaurant that has re-
mained unchanged for many years. The fish soups are served in generous (mug or kettle) por-
tions, while freshwater fish dominate: pike-perch, carp, catfish and trout. Mains from 2500Ft.
Daily noon-midnight.
Márkus Vendéglő II, Lövőház utca 17 1 212 3153 markusvendeglo.hu ; map . Close to
Széll Kálmán tér, this is a great no-frills option after a long walk in the Buda Hills. Large por-
tions of traditional Hungarian dishes, including an excellent Jókai bableves (a filling, smoky
bean soup for just 1000Ft) and various stuffed turkey dishes. Daily noon-midnight.
Vár: A Speiz I, Hess András tér 6 1 488 7416, varaspeiz.hu ; map . Just across the road
from the Hilton hotel, the distinguished “pantry” has a homely yet smart feel, with half a
dozenhugehams(fromSpain,ItalyandHungary)danglingtemptinglyneartheentrance.The
schnitzels here are outstanding - there is a special breadcrumbed section of the menu. Mains

Zona I, Lánchíd utca 7-9 30 422 5981, zonabudapest.com ; map . In his new sleek river-
front restaurant chef Krisztián Huszár presents an intriguing mix of Japanese and Basque
dishes with a Hungarian touch on his small but pricey menu. Mangalica pork sausage, mar-
inated cockles and artichokes (4900Ft), saddle of lamb, Atlantic shrimps and asparagus
(7500Ft). The wine list, however, is large - drawing on wines from around the world. Two-
course lunch 2800Ft, five-course dinner 14,900Ft. Tues-Sat noon-3pm & 7-11pm, during
the summer open evenings only.
