Elegant local Italian restaur-
ant and pizzeria place ten minutes out from Széll Kálmán tér on the #5 bus. The chicken
breast with goat's cheese is superb, as is the veal saltimbocca. The excellent pizzas start from
1600Ft - they also deliver orders. Mains 2500-5000Ft.
Daily 9am-midnight.
the favourite haunt of one of Hungary's great gourmands, the turn-of-the-century writer Gy-
ula Krúdy, and today the
Kéhli
still serves the dishes he loved, such as beef soup with bone
marrow on garlic toast. Set in one of the few old buildings in Óbuda to survive the 1960s
planning blitz, it's a big place and does attract large groups, but there are plenty of local reg-
ulars, too; eat your fill to the accompaniment of a lively Hungarian Gypsy band (Tues- Sun).
Mains 2000-4500Ft.
Daily noon-midnight.

There is an unchanging
feel to the “Wheel”, a small 100-year old restaurant in southern Óbuda - if the new manage-
ment in 2014 preserves its character. It serves traditional Hungarian food, such as
bableves
füstölt csülökkel
(bean soup with smoked pork knuckle) and
vasi pecsenye
(pork marinated
in garlic and milk) at very reasonable prices. No haute cuisine here, just locals out for a meal.
Srámli
(accordion) music is provided by a couple of old musicians (Mon-Sat from 6pm), and
there's outside seating in summer. Mains 1300-2500Ft.
Daily noon-11pm.

Popular family res-
taurant with a large leafy terrace out in Hűvösvölgy fifteen minutes' walk from the terminus
of tram #61. Excellent, well-cooked Hungarian specialities such as cold strawberry soup,
lec-
só
and duck cooked in orange. The large garden has a children's playground to one side.
Mains 2000-3500Ft.
Daily noon-11pm.
Vendéglő a KisBiróhoz
XII, Szarvas Gábor út 8/d 1 376 6044,
vendegloakisbiro-
fifteen-minute ride on bus #155 up from Széll Kálmán tér. The name is a play on the name
of the wizard chef, Lajos Biró, who produces Hungarian food with a modern twist, such as
lamb in a nettle sauce or duck breast with ginger and kohlrabi. It doesn't come cheaply (even
the butter is 300Ft) but it is worth the journey: the portions are huge and the wines - from the
Bock vineyard and elsewhere - are superb. Mains 3700-6400Ft.
Tues-Sun noon-11pm.
