Figure 20-23: Settings for the grass.
As you will notice, you can push some of
the parameters beyond 100%. In this case, I
chose 200% Coarseness and 150% Density.
color and fiber color. You can see that in the
image, where the distant hills have some
green areas and some brown areas. The
grass looks thicker where the ground is
green.
3. It still looks rather sparse and homoge-
neous. It's easy to give it more
coverage and more variety, however, by
adding another instance of SasLite.
Copy and paste the plug-in, as you did
with the rug, and choose slightly differ-
ent parameters for the second instance.
Figure 20-24 shows what I used.
You can keep going, making more interest-
ing and realistic grass, up to the eight
instances that SasLite allows. I'll leave that
for you to do. Have fun!
Note
Coarseness is linked with Length internally;
as you make the fibers shorter, such as the
grass here, they automatically become finer,
as well. (Think of them scaling in all three
dimensions.) You won't see the numbers
change, but it's happening, and those wispy
grass blades won't give you good coverage.
The answer, of course, is to crank up the
Coarseness value. In SasLite, the maximum
coarseness is 400%. (The full version can go
to 750%.)
If you decide to overdrive the Density as I
did, that increase will cost you in render
time. Often, you can get the appearance of
denser fibers by using the same surface
