Whakatane-based Walking Legends ( 07-312 5297, 0800 925 569; www.walkinglegends.com )
run small-group, fully catered, guided four-day tramps on the Lake Waikaremoana Great
Walk (from $1390), as does Te Urewera Treks ( 07-366 6055, 0800 873 937;

8 Towns & Facilities
The nearest town to the start of the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk is Tuai, a small hamlet
with a couple of accommodation options and a very small, unreliable store. Nearby is the
Big Bush Holiday Park ( 06-837 3777, 0800 525 392; www.lakewaikaremoana.co.nz; SH38; sites
from $15, s/d $30/60) , 3.5km from the Onepoto car park.
To the west, 49km from the Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre and 113km from Rotorua on
SH38, Ruatahuna is a similar size. It offers little more than a general store with fuel.
For a decent range of facilities you will need to head to Wairoa ( Click here ) , in the east,
while to the west is Murupara ( Click here ) , which will meet modest needs.
8 Getting to/from the Tramps
Waikaremoana can be approached from two directions via SH38, which links Wairoa and
the East Coast with the central North Island. The highway has a gravel surface for about
90km between Murupara and Aniwaniwa. There are well-marked side roads to the main
boat ramps, campsites and walk entrances.
Both ends of the track are easily accessible off SH38. The southern end is at Onepoto,
10km south of the national park visitor centre; the northern end is near Hopuruahine Land-
ing, 15km northwest of the visitor centre.
Shuttle buses and water taxis provide transport to both trailheads. Visitors with vehicles
would be wise to use these services so that their cars can be stored at the car park at the vis-
itor centre or Waikaremoana Holiday Park. Home Bay Water Taxi & Shuttles ( 06-837
