good fly fishing for brown trout from the shore on the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk.
Fishing with both fly and spinning gear is allowed in most areas.

Planning
WHEN TO TRAMP
Because of the mountainous nature of the area, trampers would be wise to expect rain at any
time of year, with the annual average rainfall of 2500mm swept in by prevailing northwest-
erly and southerly winds. In winter, this can turn to snow at higher altitudes.
That said, the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk and Ruapani Circuit can be tramped
throughout the year. They are particularly popular at Easter and during the summer school
holidays from mid-December until the end of January. In summer, trampers can generally
expect regular spells of fine, dry weather.
