Summary One of the most popular multiday tramps on the North Island, this track follows
most of the shoreline of Lake Waikaremoana, the largest lake in Te Urewera National Park.
Built in 1962 as a volunteer project by boys from 14 secondary schools, the Lake Waikare-
moana Great Walk is indeed a great walk, with spectacular views from Panekiri Bluff, deep
green forest, numerous beaches and swimming holes.
Due to increasing popularity, in 2001 the track was designated a Great Walk requiring ad-
vance bookings, which eliminate overcrowded huts. Around 15,000 trampers now tackle the
walk annually.
