on, has very little shopping worth mentioning, with two very big exceptions - the
superb Udelnaya Fair, St Petersburg's best flea market, and Imperial Porcelain,
the factory outlet for the tsar's own china maker.

UDELNAYA FAIR
( Удельная ярмарка ; Vyborg Side; 8am-5pm Sat & Sun; Udelnaya) St Petersburg's
only well-established flea market is one shopping experience truly worth travelling
for. A treasure trove of Soviet ephemera, prerevolutionary antiques, WWII artefacts
and bonkers kitsch from all eras, the sheer size of the place means you'll really have
to comb it to find the gems (lots of people simply turn up to sell complete junk from
their attics). Exit the metro station to the right and follow the crowds across the train
tracks. You'll soon pass a large permanent market, which is of very little interest -
continue beyond this and you'll come to a huge area of independent stalls, all totally
varying in quality and content. Come in good time, as you may well want to spend
several hours here.

( www.day-night.ru ; Malaya Posadskaya ul 6; Gorkovskaya) The main boutique of a
whole chain in the city, Day & Night looks like the set of Alien designed by Stella
McCartney, and it's certainly one of St Petersburg's premier fashion experiences. In-
side you'll find an absolutely top range of international designers: Balenciaga,
Givenchy, Bernhard Willhelm, Jil Sander and even Victoria Beckham dresses. Bring
your credit card.

SYTNY MARKET

( Сытный рынок ; 233 2293; Sytninskaya pl 3/5; 8am-6pm; Gorkovskaya) This
colourful market on the Petrograd Side sells everything from vegetables, fruit, meat
and fish inside to electronics, clothing and knick-knacks outside. Its name means
'sated' market, quite understandably.
