In-Depth Information
Ume 3km south of the village, next to the main road between the Silver View and Yamonnar
Oo resorts . One of the few independent restaurants outside the village, this friendly little
place dishes up a short menu of simple Japanese dishes (mains K4000-6000) plus a few
assorted light meals and snacks accompanied by nightly “fire dancing” at 7.30pm. Daily
10am-10pm.
DIRECTORY
Banks There are no ATMs or banks at present in Ngwe Saung - bring whatever cash you
need with you.
Internet A number of hotels and guesthouses have (erratic) wi-fi. Otherwise the only place
to get online currently is Nbine Nbine Internet (daily 10am-9.30pm), in the village opposite
the Golden Myanmar restaurant, which has a few dodgy terminals plus more reliable wi-fi
(both K500/30min).
Swimming pools Hotels in Ngwe Saung tend to charge exorbitant rates for non-guests to
use their pools. The most affordable is the medium-sized pool at the Bay of Bengal Resort
(K5000/day). The lovely pool at the Eskala resort (K7000/3hr) is another possibility. Myan-
mar Treasure Resort charges an eye-watering $10/hr, while the Aureum Palace comes in at
a mere $20/day (or free if you spend at least $30 on food and drink).

Ngapali
Asked to vote for their favourite Burmese beach, nine out of ten travellers will most likely
plump for NGAPALI .Named, according to folklore, bya homesick Italian in memory ofhis
nativecity,Ngapali(pronounced“Napoli”)hasjustabouteverythingyou'dexpectoftheper-
fect tropical getaway: kilometres of idyllic and still largely untouched beach, with powder-
fine white sands backdropped by endless palms and fringed with a discreet line of upmarket
resorts. The perfect bolthole, it feels a long way from anywhere but is easily accessible via a
short flight from Yangon (although reaching it overland remains an unquestioned slog). The
only real downside is the exorbitant cost of accommodation here, even by skyrocketing My-
anmar standards - up to double the cost of similar places down the coast in Ngwe Saung.
