This unit is all about the location and features of long-haul travel destinations - those with a fl ight time of more than
six hours from the UK. Working by yourself, or in small groups u nder the direction of your tutor, see how you get
on with the following tasks to help you make a start on thi s u n it:
Make a list of six long-haul destinations that you would like to visit and give the reasons why each appeals to
you;
Name four specifi c reference sources that you could use to fi nd information on long-haul travel destinations;
List six factors that might affect a vis i tor's choice of long-haul destination;
Think of a range of differen t ty p es of long-haul destinations that are popular with the British, e.g. cities, coastal
areas, etc.
In what ways can th e UK government help people who are travelling to long-haul destinations?
Name two popular festivals that take place in long-haul travel destinations;
Name three p opular tourist destinations in the Caribbean.

Working in travel and tourism often calls for a detailed
knowledge of long-haul travel destinations and the
features that appeal to different types of visitors.
Luckily, you are not expected to know everything about
every destination in the world the minute you start your
job in the sector! Knowledge and experience of long-
haul destinations grows over time. However, what you
will be expected to learn are the most useful sources
of information on long-haul destinations, which is the
topic we examine fi rst in this unit.
Reference sources on long-haul travel destinations are
used by a variety of people working in the travel and
tourism sector, for example in travel agencies, tour
operators, tourist boards, airlines and hotel groups.
