The growth in air travel across the world means that
there are increasing numbers of career opportunities
with airlines and in airports. Airlines recruit for a wide
range of jobs, from pilots and other fl ight crew to cabin
crew and customer service staff. Functions such as
baggage handling, in-fl ight catering and maintenance
are usually carried out by specialist companies based
in the airports working on behalf of many airlines.

Introduction
bmi (part of the Lufthansa group) is the seco n d-largest airline operating out of London Heathrow, after
British Airways, with fl ights within the UK and to Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa. The airline
currently employs more than 4,000 staff and has a fl eet of 47 aircraft. Air cabin crew are responsible for
looking after passengers on aircraft and making sure that they have a safe and enjoyable fl ight. This involves
checking cabin equipment, serving meals and drinks, looking after in-fl ight entertainment and making sure
