The harbour is encircled by a succession of pricey restaurants, tavernas and cafés which are usually better for a drink than a
meal. Away from the water, there are plenty of slightly cheaper possibilities on Kondhiláki, Zambelíou and most of the
streets off Hálidhon.

Faka Arholéon 15 T 28210 42341. Set back from the
harbour in the small square behind the Arsenali building,
this is significantly less touristy and less expensive than
many near neighbours. Excellent traditional local food,
often with live Greek music. May-Oct daily lunch &

Karnayio Platía Kateháki 8, next to the Arsenali
T 28210 53366. Not right on the water, but one of the
best harbour restaurants nonetheless. Excellent fish,
traditional Cretan cooking and a fine selection of wines -
all served on an inviting terrace - make this a winner.
Mains from €5.50. May-Oct daily lunch & dinner.
Ì Portes Portoú 48 T 28210 76261. A small group
of restaurants nestles under the walls along Portoú.
Portes is smarter than most, with a particularly
adventurous menu putting a modern twist on age-old
dishes: rabbit with prunes (€9.50), cuttlefish with fennel
(€8.50), and traditional pies with unusual fillings.

To Pigadi tou Tourkou Sarpáki 1 T 28210 54547,
W welloftheturk.com. Greco-Moroccan restaurant (the
name translates to “Well of the Turk”) with an interesting
menu combining the two cuisines along with dishes from
the Middle East. Mains from €8. Wed-Sun dinner only;
closed Dec.
Ì Tamam Zambelíou T 28210 96080,
W tamamrestaurant.com. Popular place where the
adventurous Greek menu includes much vegetarian food,
with added spices giving an eastern flavour. The original
restaurant is housed in an old Turkish baths, while opposite
is the less atmospheric annexe, Tamam II ; tables are
squeezed into the alley between the two. Mains from €6.

CAFÉS
Ì Alcanea Angélou 2 T 28210 75370. Small, relaxed
terrace café at the quieter western tip of the harbour, beneath
the hotel of the same name, next to the naval museum. Good
for breakfast, coffee or evening drinks. Daily 9am-late.
Iordanis Bougatsa Branches at Kydhonías 96 and
Apokorónou 24. Specializes in traditional creamy
bougátsa , a sugar-coated cream-cheese pie to eat in or
take away. Mon-Sat 8am-3pm.
Kormoranos Theotokopoúlou. This bakery/café/ouzerí
serves pastries washed down by juices, herb teas and coffee
during the day, and an ouzerí serving delicious meze to go
with your drinks at night. May-Oct daily 9am-late.
Muses Platía Sindriváni. Pleasant café on the harbour
square, in a prime position for people-watching, serves
breakfasts, coffees, snacks and late drinks. May-Oct daily
7am-late.

RESTAURANTS
Ì Akrogiali Aktí Papanikolí 19, Néa Hóra T 28210
73110. Opposite the city beach, with a summer terrace, this
excellent, reasonably priced fish and seafood taverna is well
worth the 15min walk or short taxi ride. Always packed with
locals, so may be worth booking - though there are plenty of
alternatives along the same street. Daily lunch & dinner.
Amphora Aktí Koundouriótou, under Hotel Amphora
T 28210 93224. One of the most reliable places on the
outer harbour seafront, across from the lighthouse, with
good, simple home-cooked Greek food, fish and seafood.
Mains €5.50-10 . March-Nov daily 10am-late.
Apostolis 1 and 2 Aktí Enóseos 6 & 10, inner harbour
T 28210 43470. The fish tavernas at the inner end of the
harbour are rated much more highly by locals than those
further round - some locals claim Apostolis 2 is the best of
all. The fish is excellent, but pricey. Daily lunch & dinner.

DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
The harbour area contains dozens of beautifully set but touristy bars. Locals head east, to the inner harbour and beyond to
Koum Kápi, where the scores of bars and cafés lining Aktí Miaoúli are heaving by 11pm. In summer the action moves to the
vibrant club scene on the coast west of town.

Cretan music and dancing virtually every night at what is
basically an old-fashioned kafenío . Daily 7.30pm-late.
