bar.com. An old favourite, popular with tourists and
occasional visiting military, this small but lively bar belts
out a mixture of rock classics, dance music and latest
tracks. May-Oct daily 9pm-4am, Nov-April Wed-
Mon 8pm-2am.
Elliniko Aktí Miaoúli T 28210 27729. One of the more
popular and consistent of the bar-cafés on the Koum Kápi
strip to the east, beyond the harbour, packed nightly with
young locals: if this doesn't appeal, take your pick from its
dozens of neighbours. Daily 10am-late.
Ì Fagotto Angélou 16 T 28210 71877. Laidback,
indoor jazz bar of the quieter end of the harbour, often
with live performances. Daily 8pm-late.
Mylos Main street, Plataniás T 28210 60449. Large,
buzzing summer nightclub with four indoor bars and a
large dancefloor, on the coast 10km out of town, in the
busy resort of Plataniás, popular with both locals and
tourists. June-Sept midnight-6am.
Pallas Aktí Tombázi 15, near Port Police T 28210
45688. Popular harbourfront café-bar with a terrace that's
ideally placed to admire the sunset over the harbour. In
winter the action moves indoors to the first-floor music bar.

Ì Rudi's Bierhaus Kalergón 16 T 28210 50824.
Austrian - and long-time Haniá resident - Rudi Riegler's
bar stocks more than a hundred of Europe's finest beers.
Excellent mezédhes to accompany them. Daily
8pm-late.
Ta Duo Lux Sarpidhónos T 28210 52519. Comfy bar-
café in a street full of similar places, just of the inner
harbour, that attracts a slightly older crowd than nearby
Aktí Miaoúli. Daily 10am-late.

Banks and exchange The National Bank of Greece is
directly opposite the market with three ATMs, and there's a
cluster of banks with more ATMs around the top of
Halídhon. You'll also find plenty of out-of-hours exchange
places on Hálidhon, in the travel agencies.
Internet access There are plenty of internet cafés
including Vranas, Ayíon Dhéka beneath Vranas Studios (see
p.499), Triple W, Odhós Balantínou just of the top of
Hálidhon, and Café Notos (May-Oct) on the outer harbour
under the Hotel Lucia .
Laundry Speedy Laundry ( T 28210 88411), junction of
Koronéou and Korkídhi, just west of Platía 1866, will collect
and deliver your load if you call; the Old Town Laundromat,
Karaóli 40; Oscar, Kanevárou, just off Platía Syndriváni.
Left luggage The bus station has a left-luggage office
(6am-8.30pm).
Market and supermarkets The central indoor market
has fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, dairy stalls
and a baker; on Saturday mornings there is a farmer's
market ( laïki ) with a wonderful line of stalls along Minöos,
inside the eastern city wall, selling local produce. Several
small stores by the harbour platía sell cold drinks and food;
they are expensive but open late. Small supermarkets can
be found on Platía 1866, and the larger Carrefour
supermarket is at the top of Pireós, outside the western
wall, close to the Schiavo bastion.
Post o ce The main post office is on Odhs Perídou just off
the bottom of Kydhonías (Mon-Fri 7.30am-8pm, Sat
9am-1pm).
Travel agencies Concentrated around the top of Hálidhon
and on Platía 1866, as well as around the bus station. Try
Tellus Travel, Hálidhon 108 ( T 28210 91500, W tellustravel
.gr), or in the old town El Greco Travel, Theotokopoúlou 50
( T 28210 86015, W elgreco.gr).
Around Haniá
Northeast of Haniá, the Akrotíri peninsula loops around, protecting the Bay of Soúdha.
The peninsula has a number of sandy beaches and coves on the northeast side; beyond
the suburb of Kounoupidhianá lies the excellent sandy beach of Kalathás and, further
out, lies Stavrós with its magnificent mountain soaring up out of the bay, while inland
are the monasteries of Ayía Triádha and Gouvernétou .
The coast west of Haniá has considerable tourist development along much of the
shore to Áyía Marína and Plataniás . Beyond, the road to Kolymvári runs through mixed
groves of calamus reed (Crete's bamboo) and oranges; the windbreaks fashioned from
the reeds protect the ripening oranges from the meltémi . You'll still find long, quiet
stretches of sand here, between hotels and villages.
Ayía Triádha

The majestic three-domed Ayía Triádha monastery, originally built in the seventeenth
century on the ruins of an old church, is approached via an avenue of cypress trees and
surrounded by olive groves and vines - all property of the monastery; it's a thriving
