Koumbarakia Egnatía 140 T 2310 271 905. Tucked
behind a tiny Byzantine chapel, the outdoor tables of this
durable, budget ouzerí groan with Macedonian-style grills
for €8-10, seafood and salads, including túrsi (pickled
vegetables). Mon-Sat noon-midnight, Sun noon-6pm.
Krasodhikio Filíppou 18 T 2310 239 031. Another fine
ouzerí, serving a range of ample meat and seafood meals
and mezédhes for under €10 on the pavement in summer
or in the cosy interior when it's cold. Daily noon-1.15am.
Molyvos Kapodhistríou 1 T 2310 555 952, W molyvos
.gr. Ouzo and mezédhes combos for €12-15 from Crete,
Lesvos, Cyclades and Istanbul are among the regional
specialities served at this first-floor taverna-ouzerí, with an
attached shop selling ouzo and olive oils. Daily 11am-2am.
Ì Myrovolos Smyrni In arcade in the Modhiáno off
Komninón 32 T 2310 274 170. Friendly, crowded ouzerí,
also known as Tou Thanassi . Typical dishes include cheese-
stuffed squid, Smyrna-style meatballs, stuffed potatoes
and grilled baby fish. Reservations recommended. Daily
noon-2am, closed Sun eves.
Ì Nea Ilyssia Sófou 17 T 2310 514 162. Just below
Egnatía, this popular restaurant is great for mayireftá , such
as beef in tomato sauce and lamb fricassé for €7-8, as well
as filling souvlaki. Daily 8.30am-2am, Fri-Sat till 4am.
Ta Bakaliarakia tou Aristou Katoúni 3, Ladhádhika
T 2310 542 906. Heapings of cod and chips, served on
greaseproof paper for around €6-7, make this joint in a
pedestrianized portside alley quite memorable. Second
branch one block away. Daily 9am-7pm.
Tre Marie P.P. Yermanoú 13 T 2310 240 051. This smart
trattoria serves a selection of risotto and pasta dishes for
€15-20 in a marble- and- dark- wood dining room with
stained-glass ceiling panels and sparkling chandeliers.
Small outside terrace. Daily 11am-midnight.
Tsarouhas Olýmbou 78 T 2310 271 621. Reputedly the
best and certainly the most famous of the city's
patsatzídhika , churning out rich tripe-and-trotter soup for
€8. Lots of other tasty mayireftá and Anatolian puddings.

Vrotos Mitropolítou Yennadhíou 6, Platía Áthonos
T 2310 223 958. One of the most popular ouzerís here,
with something for all tastes: elaborate vegetable dishes
with or without cheese, plus creative meat and seafood
recipes for €8-10. Reservations recommended. Daily
11am-2am; closed Sun eves.
Zythos Platía Katoúni 5, Ladhádhika T 2310 540 284,
W zithos.gr. Imaginative Greek mezédhes plus a range of
sausages and pasta dishes for around €10, along with an
excellent selection of wines and beers, both draught and
bottled. Reservations recommended at weekends. Food
served daily noon-9.30pm, bar 10am-2am.
ÁNO PÓLI
Kreonidis Leofóros Óhi 4 T 2310 206 006. This
psistariá /ouzerí has tables overlooking the city and sea,
where you can eat grills or mezédhes for under €10 while
enjoying the splendid view. Daily noon-1am.
Ladhokolla me Thea Kýprou 2 T 2310 210 805. The
increasingly popular trend of eating chunks of pork or lamb
on greaseproof paper for around €8 has reached Áno Póli
with this otherwise smart taverna. Daily noon-midnight.
Ì O Volos sta…Kastra! Gravías 1 T 2310 210 819. A
range of dips, salads, meats and fish, as well as seafood
risotto and shrimp spaghetti, can be enjoyed for €12 or
under along with organic Cretan wine in this taverna cum
ouzerí. Daily noon-2am.
Ì To Makedhoniko Y Papadhopoúlou 32, Sykiés
T 2310 627 438. Tucked inside the western city gate, this
old-fashioned taverna with a triangular courtyard serves
an excellent but limited range of grills, dips, salads and
barrelled retsina. Stuff yourself and drink merrily for little
over €10 in total. Tues-Sun noon-midnight.

NIGHTLIFE
Apart from the almost unbroken line of expensive café-bars on the seafront Leofóros Níkis and around Platía
Aristotélous , the most fashionable nightlife is to be found in Ladhádhika , near the port. Bustling Platía Navarínou
and the nearby pedestrianized streets, Iktínou and Zefxídhou , also contain some of the trendiest establishments in the
city. During the warmer months, action mostly shifts to various glitzy, barn-like establishments lining the coast road out to
Kalamariá , for which you'll need to take taxis.
A Votre Santé Mitropóleos 70 T 2310 239 494. Low-
key café-bar that offers a wide range of range of imported
beers and cocktails, as well as quality chocolates. The
musical background shifts from Greek éntekhno to jazz and
ethnic. Daily 8.30am-2.30am.
Decadence A Yeoryíou 21, near the Mylos centre. The
most highly rated of the big clubs for cutting-edge dance,
techno and progressive house music. Oct-May Wed-Sun
10pm-late.
Dizzy Eyíptou 5, Ladhádhika. Full-on rock/goth sounds
abound in this lively bar with motorbikes hanging from
sturdy wooden beams and Guinness or other beers on tap.
