small, crowded student favourite retains touches of
eccentricity in its decor with the odd gnome and abstract
painting; good cocktails and vegetarian snacks too. Daily

THEATRE

converted from a deconsecrated Catholic monastery. It's
2km north of the centre along Langadhá. Buses #34 and
#38 go there from Platía Dhikastiríon.
Mylos at Andhréou Yeoryíou 56 T 2310 551 836,
W mylos.gr. A multifunctional cultural complex housed in
an old flour mill some way west of the centre. Here you'll
find a couple of bars, a live jazz café, a popular tsipourádhiko ,
a summer cinema, a theatre, concert halls and exhibition
galleries.

Makedhonikón Spoudhón or the ultramodern Vassilikó
Théatro, both near the White Tower. In summer, things
move to one of a number of outdoor venues: the Théatro
Kípou, near the archeological museum; well up the hill at
the Théatro Dhássous, in the pines east of the upper town,
with events from late June to mid-September; or the
Théatro Damári in Triandhría district.
CINEMA
Thessaloníki is a cinephile city, never more so than during
its annual film festival ( W ilmfestival.gr), and while open-
air cinemas are now thin on the ground, they are worth
seeking out in summer.

SHOPPING
Thessaloníki is not a major shopping destination but has
the mixture of independent and big brand outlets you
would expect for any European city of its size, mostly along
or just off Tsimiskí, as well as suburban malls. Travellers are
most likely to hunt for books, music or the odd souvenir.
The Artware Shop Avyerinoú 14 Platía Áthonos,

buy your bouzouki or choose from a range of other quality

stocks of English-language books on a huge range of topics
from art and fiction to philosophy and natural history.

outpost of the popular Athenian chain, offering a wide
selection of Greek CDs, as well as international rock, dance,

music shop, with lots of out-of-print vinyl and even
