Installing Solaris 9 on a New System Using
Web Start
If you're installing Solaris 9 on a single new system, the preferred installation
method is to install from a local CD-ROM/DVD drive using Web Start
because it provides a series of graphical screens to collect the required sys-
tem configuration information. Network-based installation is described
briefly later in this chapter and in more detail in Chapter 17.
The Solaris Web Start can be accessed using a command-line interface or a
graphical interface. The installation is logically divided into three phases:

The following list summarizes the information that you should collect or
determine before installing Solaris 9 from your local CD-ROM/DVD drive.
If the system is networked (it will be attached to a network), decide
whether DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) will be used. If not,
determine the hostname, IP (Internet Protocol) address, and subnet
mask information.
➤
If a name service is used such as Domain Name Service (DNS),
Lightweight Direct Access Protocol (LDAP), Network Information
Service (NIS), or Network Information Service Plus (NIS+), determine
the domain name.
➤
Determine whether IPv6 should be enabled.
➤
Determine whether Kerberos security should be configured. If so, deter-
mine the default realm, the administrative server, the first KDCS, and
the optional additional KDCSs.
➤
If NIS or NIS+ is used, but you do not want the system to automatically
find a NIS/NIS+ server, specify the server's hostname and IP address.
➤
If DNS is used, determine at least one server IP address and, optionally,
a list of domains to search.
➤
If LDAP is used, determine the LDAP profile name, the server, and the
server's IP address.
➤
Determine the IP address of the default router.
