In-Depth Information
( 360-378-1842; 380 West Side Rd; hiker/cyclist sites per person $10, campsites $32) San
Juan's best campground is beautifully located in a county park on the scenic western
shoreline. The site includes a beach and boat launch, along with 20 pitches, flush toilets
and picnic tables. At night the lights of Victoria, BC, flicker theatrically from across the
Haro Strait. Reservations are mandatory during peak season.
Wayfarer's Rest HOSTEL$
( 360-378-6428; 35 Malcolm St, Friday Harbor; dm $35, r $65-80; ) The island's only back-
packers hostel is a short hike from the ferry terminal. Budget travelers will love its com-
fortable dorms and cheap private rooms but beware - it gets busy.
Roche Harbor Resort RESORT$$$

( 800-451-8910; www.rocheharbor.com ; Roche Harbor; r with shared bath $149, 1- to 3-bedroom
condos $275-450, 2-bedroom townhouses $499; ) Located on the site of the former
lime kiln and estate of limestone king John McMillin, this seaside 'village' is a great get-
away. The centerpiece is the old Hotel de Haro, where the pokey rooms are enlivened by
the fact that John Wayne once brushed his teeth here. Town houses are up behind the har-
bor, and modern condominiums are tucked behind trees.
Waterfront restaurants, a 377-berth marina with boat rentals, a new spa and an old
dockside general store make the place quite self-contained. It can feel a bit contrived and
overly gentrified - lovers of back-to-nature type lodgings should stay elsewhere.
Earthbox Motel & Spa MOTEL$$$
(
360-378-4000; www.earthboxmotel.com ; 410 Spring St, Friday Harbor; r from $182;
)
Earthbox is a hybrid of simplicity and sophistication as a former motor inn embellished
with features more commonly associated with a deluxe hotel. The result: a variety of
funky, cleverly designed rooms with comfy beds and colorful yet minimalist undercur-
rents. Other bonuses include a pool, spa, fitness room, bike rental and fine gardens.
Juniper Lane Guest House INN$$$
MAP
( 360-378-7761; www.juniperlaneguesthouse.com ; 1312 Beaverton Valley Rd; r $85-135; )
The handful of wood paneled rooms here are decorated with a colorful and eclectic as-
sortment of art and furnishings, much of it refurbished or recycled. The result is a sub-
limely cozy and livable hybrid of an upscale backpackers and a hip inn. Chill on the
couch in the common area and meet other guests cooking in the common kitchen.
