WWI
Four major military bases are established in Texas for training - Camp Travis (San Antonio), Camp
Logan (Houston), Camp MacArthur (Waco) and Camp Bowie (Fort Worth).
1920s
Twenty-eight bars and two breweries line the party-hearty streets of Brenham, Texas. Prohibition
comes to town, bars close, and the parties go underground.
1930s
WPA workers begin to restore and renovate San Antonio's old Spanish missions, which have fallen
into disrepair since Texas' independence from Mexico.

1969
Neil Armstrong transmits the first words from the surface of the moon: 'Houston, the Eagle has
landed,' on July 20.
1978
Dallas, the prime-time soap opera following the oil-rich Ewing clan, premieres to an adoring audience.
Fans storm the real Southfork Ranch.
1970s
Gas prices quadruple. Texans - who are the biggest domestic oil supplier and have many of the na-
tion's largest refineries - profit and profit some more.
