In September 1, Hurricane Ike makes landfall at Galveston, devastating the island and knocking out
power in parts of Houston for 21 days.
2011
NASA's Mission Control at Johnson Space Center in Houston guides the last space shuttle launch
before decommissioning the spacecraft.
2013
On April 17, 2013, a fertilizer plant explosion killed 15 and wounded at least 160, devastating the tiny
town of West, Texas (population 2800).
