The retro- tropical vibe is a little old-school Vegas, a little Miami Beach,
but this breezy hotel comes about it honestly, having originally opened in 1962. A fresh,
mid-century modern lobby and updated rooms make it feel fun instead of old. (The $18
parking, however, can dampen the fun.)

Presided over by a venerable pecan tree, this B&B is in a beautiful, peaceful setting by the
river. Each cheery room has its own private bath, with the more expensive digs equipped
with a Jacuzzi, private porch or balcony.

Soaring ceilings with enormous windows, exposed brick walls, crisp, white
bedding - this is simplicity done right. And just because the decor is simple doesn't mean
it doesn't pamper: there are still plenty of niceties like flat-screen TVs, leather chairs and
feather blankets.

Historic? Definitely. This place was built in the shadow of the Alamo a scant 23 years
after the famous battle. Oscar Wilde, Mae West, Teddy Roosevelt - the former guest list is
impressive. Over the decades, new additions kept getting built on, so it's a bit rambling
and confusing to get around.
The vaguely charming 'Antique Rooms' are the same price as the refurbished rooms,
which are the same price as the unrefurbished rooms from the 1960s. Be clear about what
you're reserving.
