FIESTA SAN ANTONIO
In late April, hundreds of thousands of partygoers throng the streets of San Antonio for Fiesta San Antonio ( Click
here ). A 10-day series of riotous events makes for the city's biggest celebration, with general mayhem, fairs,
rodeos, races and a whole lot of music and dancing. Going strong after more than 120 years, the festival is the
high point of the River City's year.
Fiesta San Antonio dates back to 1891, when local women paraded on horseback in front of the Alamo and
threw flowers at each other, all meant to honor the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. Today's
Battle of the Flowers ( www.battleofflowers.org ) is only a small piece of Fiesta, which has grown into an enorm-
ous party involving 75,000 volunteers, millions of spectators and more than 150 events.
At the beginning of Fiesta week, the Texas Cavaliers' River Parade kicks off with decorated floats drifting
along the San Antonio River and a pilgrimage to the Alamo. On the final Saturday night, Fiesta Flambeau
claims to be the largest lighted parade in the USA, with marchers carrying candles, sparklers, flashlights, torches
and anything else handy.
But locals' top pick of Fiesta week is A Night in Old San Antonio (aka 'NIOSA') which runs for four nights,
during which a small army of women volunteers transform La Villita into a multiethnic bazaar of food, music,
dancing, arts and much, much more.
