In-Depth Information
St Wolfgang is a charming town situated on the steep banks of the Wolfgangsee. Al-
though its streets can get clogged with visitors during the day, things usually settle down
by early evening, which is the best time for a tranquil stroll along the forested lakeshore
past the gently creaking wooden boathouses.
The village's main fame arose as a place of pilgrimage, and today's visitors still come
to see the 14th-century pilgrimage church, packed with art treasures. Note that Markt in
the centre of town is a wi-fi hotspot.
Sights & Activities
Wallfahrtskirche
(Pilgrimage Church; Markt; donation €1; 9am-6pm) St Wolfgang's impressive Wallfahrtskirche is
a spectacular gallery of religious art, with glittering altars (from Gothic to baroque), an
extravagant pulpit, a fine organ, and countless statues and paintings. The most impressive
piece is the winged high altar, created by celebrated religious artist Michael Pacher
between 1471 and 1481 - it's a perfect example of the German Gothic style, enhanced
with the technical achievements of Renaissance Italy.

Wolfgangsee
A number of hotels have jetties for swimming, and a tourist-office booklet details the
many water sports on offer. A nice thing to do is to walk or cycle to Strobl, 6km away
(around 1½ hours on foot), ending the excursion with a swim.
