ulation 2750), is a less remarkable but pleasant place at the start of a scenic toll road (per
car and per person €3) to Postalm (1400m).
A ferry ( www.wolfgangseeschifffahrt.at ; late Mar - Oct) service operates from Strobl to St Gil-
gen (€9.50, 75 minutes), stopping at points en route. Services are most frequent from late
June to early September. Children pay half-price.
The Wolfgangsee is dominated by the 1783m Schafberg mountain on its northern
shore. At the summit you'll find a hotel, restaurant and phenomenal views over moun-
tains and lakes (especially Mondsee, Attersee and, of course, Wolfgangsee). If you don't
fancy the three- to four-hour walk from St Wolfgang (early tourists were carried up in
sedan chairs), ride the Schafbergbahn (adult/child one way €21.40/10.70, return €31/15.50; May-Oct) ,
which takes 35 minutes one way. Departures are approximately hourly between 9.15am
and 3pm (last trip down 5.15pm), but the trip is so popular that you probably won't be
able to simply jump on the next train. Queue early, purchase a ticket for a specific train,
and then go for a wander along the lake or around St Wolfgang until your time comes to
depart.
SOMETHING SPECIAL - PLACES TO STAY
The Traunsee has two interesting hotels on its eastern shore, both unique in different ways.
Landhotel Grünberg am See ( 777 00; www.gruenberg.at ; Traunsteinstrasse 109; s €60-80, d
€100-120, restaurant mains €10-17.50; ) is a homely guesthouse and restaurant situated 2km from
Rathausplatz in Gmunden. It has a loyal following as an informal getaway, especially in summer. Rooms are
modern, and the more expensive ones have lake views. Ingrid Pernkopf, part-owner, writes cooking books and
gives cooking courses on Upper Austrian and Austrian specialities, so expect fish and local favourites, some us-
ing organic ingredients. There's outdoor seating with lake views, as well as waterskiing from the private jetty for
the actively inclined. A section of the walking trail leading to the pretty Laudachsee (three hours) begins behind
the building.
Nearby, Schlosshotel Freisitz Roith ( 649 05; www.freisitzroith.at ; Traunsteinstrasse 87; s €95-135, d
€200-230, ste €270-310, restaurant mains €17 to €22; ) is a great wellness hotel set on a rise slightly
back from the road, in grounds replete with a fountain and fruit trees. There are rapturous views from the rooms
(less-expensive rooms don't have lake views), and from the atrium and terrace restaurant.
Taxi ( 679 09) is the easiest way to reach the hotels, but the Panorama Shuttle and Traunsee Schiffahrt run
out here in summer months.
