LOW-KEY STROBL
While high-profile Wolfgangsee towns such as St Wolfgang and St Gilgen justifiably attract large numbers of
visitors, the lesser-known and more low-key Strobl at the eastern end of the lake is well worth a visit.
From the shoreline in Strobl you can walk northeast along the lake for about five to 10 minutes towards
Bürglstein, the high bluff rising above the lake. Just over the bridge, an easy-going trail (also a bike trail, though
you'll need to dismount at a few sections) leads to St Wolfgang (6km, 1½ hours) along the shore. This follows a
path and boardwalks around the bluff (the nicest stretch) to the settlement of Schwarzenbach (which is also a
ferry stop). From Schwarzenbach the road runs near the trail, so it's not as secluded or tranquil. Locals who are
reasonably strong swimmers sometimes enter the water near the bridge and even swim part or all of the way to
Schwarzenbach. Joggers, cyclists and hikers can also do the easy trail around Bürglstein (9km, 1½ hours) or join
other trails going away from the Wolfgangsee.
You can hire bikes from Sport Girbl ( 0664-221 79 85; Bahnstrasse 300; 7-gear bicycles per day €10,
mountain e-bikes €28, e-bikes €20; 8am-noon & 2.30-6pm).
Strobler Hof ( 06137-7308; www.stroblerhof.at ; Ischler Strasse 16; per person €78-98 incl 1 meal;
lunch & dinner; ), an upmarket hotel with an inexpensive Tex-Mex restaurant upstairs (mains €7.50
to €17.50) and a formal Austrian restaurant (mains €10.50 to €22) set in the grounds, is a great place to stay or
eat in Strobl. Reserve ahead for an outside table in summer; some ingredients are organic.
Sleeping
St Wolfgang has some good private rooms in village homes or in farmhouses in the sur-
rounding hills. Lists are available from the tourist office, which will phone places on your
behalf.
Haus am See

markable Pension with features ripe for a Wolfgangsee mystery novel: it's run by a re-
tired professor and his wife, and evokes earlier decades. The owners also rent out four
rooms in their boatshed down on the water (for the same price). Guests get free use of a
boat and bike. It's conveniently opposite the Au bus stop.
PENSION
Hotel Peter

this four-star hotel have balconies looking onto the lake, large bathrooms and tasteful de-
cor. The restaurant (most mains €13 to €17) has a terrace overlooking the lake, and serves
pasta and a good fish platter filled with poached, fried and baked local fish. The restaur-
ant has wi-fi.
