Unprepossessing Leoben reveals a few surprises once you dig down into its modest urban
soul. A revamped museum quarter is one very good reason to prolong a flying visit here
between trains. The town is also a centre for metallurgical industries and home to Gösser
beer, and achieved ultimate fame with the peace treaty signed here in 1797 by Napoleon
and Emperor Franz II.
Sights & Activities
Tourismusverband Leoben can help arrange tours into an early-Romanesque crypt of the
Stiftkirche (foundation church) or visits to the local Gösser Brewery , both about 4km south of
the centre in the suburb of Göss.

Dating from the 13th century, this long, rectangular square has an attractive Pestsäule
(Plague Column; 1717). Many of the elegant facades lining the square were created in the
17th century, including the baroque Hacklhaus (Hauptplatz 9) from 1660. Leoben's connection
