with the iron industry is seen in the curious town motif displayed on the Altes Rathaus
(Hauptplatz 1) facade, which shows an ostrich eating horseshoes.
At the northern end you find a fountain from 1794 with an angel holding the town's
heraldic shield, and at the opposite end is a fountain dedicated to miners (1799).
Pfarrkirche St Xaver
(Kirchplatz 1; 8am-7pm) The simple exterior of this early baroque church, built in 1665 as a
Jesuit church, belies a complex interior of white walls and black-and-gold baroque altars.

Kunsthalle

tria's best temporary exhibitions to be found outside the capital. Its permanent Schienen
der Vergangenheit (Tracks of the Past) in the MuseumsCenter Leoben ( www.museumscenter-leo-
ben.at ; Kirchgasse 6; adult/child/family €5/3.50/11; 10am-5pm Tue-Sat, longer hours during Kunsthalle exhibi-
tions) tells the history of Leoben and the town's industries. Check the website for informa-
tion on prices and temporary exhibitions, which are staged for seven to eight months
every second year. Combined tickets are available.

ing on top of the circular city tower. From here you have breathtaking views over the
town and countryside. Book ahead for the Pension, and if no one answers the door, drop
by the antique shop next door or the cafe.
