In-Depth Information
The main attraction is the beach , a 30m to 70m (depending on lake levels) expanse of
gray volcanic sand that retreats almost to the sea wall at the height of the rainy season.
You can hire bikes (US$8 per day) and horses (US$4 per hour) from Hotel Finca Santo
Domingo, or if you want to spread the money around, look for signs at roadside stores that
rent out bikes and motorbikes.
Río Istiam
On the south side of the isthmus, this river shimmers as it snakes through the island's lava
valley. The best way to explore the river (which is really a swamp) is by kayak - you're
pretty much guaranteed to see turtles, caimans and howler monkeys. Enquire at nearby
hotels.

SWIMMING
La Presa Ojo de Agua
OFFLINE MAP
(admission US$2; comedor daylight hours) On the isthmus take a pleasant stroll through ba-
nana plantations to the well-signed shady swimming hole about 1.5km north of Playa
Santo Domingo. The mineral-infused water here bubbles up from 35 small underground
springs and, with an average temperature of 22°C to 28°C (71°F to 82°F), makes for a re-
freshing dip. There are two entrances, one at the northern end and one at the southern.
Sendero Peña Inculta
(admission US$2.50) This is a 1.5km interpretative trail meandering through the forest on
the outskirts of Playa Santo Domingo. The trail starts just north of the village and ends op-
posite Villa Paraíso. At least 63 species of bird inhabit these parts, so walk quietly and
look up every now and then. And make sure you wear good shoes - the loose volcanic-
rock path can get very spiky!
HIKING
Canopy Sendero Los Monos
(per person US$10) If you're in the mood for more modern ecotourism, across from Hotel
Finca Santo Domingo, Canopy Sendero Los Monos offers six platforms and 500m of zip
lines constructed by a reputable company.
CANOPY TOUR
