BUS
Bus departures are more frequent here than anywhere else on the island. Timetables
change rapidly - if you're going out for the day, ask your driver what time the last bus re-
turns. Bear in mind that all buses pass Altagracia, stopping for half an hour, and that it can
take three hours (on a good day) to get from Moyogalpa to San Ramón. Bus services:
Altagracia (US$0.75, one hour, 5:30am to 6:45pm, hourly)
Balgüe (US$1.10, two hours, 2:40pm)
Mérida (US$1.25, 2½ hours, 8:30am, 2:40pm and 4:30pm)
San Ramón (US$1.10, three hours, 8:30am and 2:30pm)
Volcán Concepción
The 10- to 12-hour hike (guides per person US$12-20) up loose volcanic stone to the summit
of this looming peak can be tough, so be in good physical condition and bring water,
snacks and real hiking shoes. Most hikes leave from either Moyogalpa or Altagracia. Re-
member that there's no shade above the tree line, it's even steeper than it looks, and it can
get windy and cold, particularly if it's cloudy, at the top. It's almost always cloudy at the
top, which means your chances of seeing the fuming craters and awesome views over the
lake and across Central America's volcanic spine are slim, even during dry season. There
are three main trails to the top: La Concha and La Flor (the most popular trail), both close
to Moyogalpa, and La Sabana, a short distance from Altagracia.
