Using Web-Based Applications
These days, developers can use a number of programming languages to run web-based applications within a web
browser. A
web-based application
is software that is downloaded and run within the web browser rather than being
installed directly on the user's computer.
A good example of a web-based application Outlook.com (previously called Hotmail). You use this program to read
and write email messages. All the messages are stored on the server, not on your computer.
Web-based applications offer developers increased flexibility. Because they are browser-based, developers can build
applications that work regardless of operating system. Web-based applications also alleviate concerns about local
data storage. Finally, web-based applications are easier to update; there is no need to install and maintain applica-
tions on the local level. To capitalize on this new technology, many companies are moving to a subscription-based
model, where users pay a monthly fee to use it rather than purchasing it outright.
