(Pizarro 758; breakfast & sandwiches S6-14; 8am-midnight) If you're sick of the tiny
plate of eggs your hotel is throwing at you in the morning, check out Oviedo's long list of
breakfasts - from a simple continental to a hearty criollo (spicy Peruvian fare with Span-
ish and African influences) that comes with a pork chop.

(Zepita 704; meals S3-8; 8:30am-6pm Mon-Sat, to 4pm Sun) The tiny corner spot
known as 'The Sun' maintains a short but surprising list of imitation meat dishes and al-
ways has a daily lunch menú for about S5. Plenty of nonvegetarians eat here, attesting to
its hearty and delicious offerings, and there are macrobiotic options to boot.

Drinking & Entertainment
Trujillo's local newspaper La Industria ( www.laindustria.pe ) is the best source for in-
formation about local entertainment, cultural exhibitions and other events.
El Celler de Cler

(cnr Gamarra & Independencia; mains S12-24, cocktails S12-18; 6pm-1am) This at-
mospheric spot is the only spot in Trujillo to enjoy a cocktail on a 2nd-floor colonial bal-
cony. The wrap-around number here dates to the early 1800s, but the coup doesn't stop
there: antiques fuel the decor, from a '50s-era American cash register to an extraordinary
Industrial Revolution pulley lamp from the UK.
The food is upscale pasta and grills (great meat, typically disappointing fries), but it's
the creative cocktails that shine, like the classic chilcano (pisco, ginger ale and lime
juice), souped up here with any number of twists ( rocoto, ají limo, maracuya etc). Try to
go after rush hour or on a weekend as, ambience notwithstanding, the streets below are
noisy.
