swimming, the larger of which is claimed by Oasis Bungalows, which charges S5 (free if
you are staying in its bungalows) to swim. Paraíso Bungalows doesn't charge for the
smaller swimming pool, and there is a local dispute over whether travelers should be
charged to use the pools at all. Do not light campfires as almost half of the trees in the
area have been destroyed in this manner, and cart all trash out with you. The return trek to
Cabanaconde is a stiff climb and thirsty work; allow 1½ hours (superfit), two to 2½ hours
(fit), three hours plus (average fitness). There's drink and food available in Sangalle.
'EL CLÁSICO' TREK
Short on time? Confused by the complicated web of Colca paths? Couldn't stand the crowds on the Inca Trail?
What you need is 'El Clásico,' the unofficial name for a circular two- to three-day hike that incorporates the best
parts of the mid-lower Colca Canyon below the Cruz del Cóndor and Cabanaconde. Commence by walking out of
Cabanaconde on the Chivay road. At the San Miguel viewpoint, start a long 1200m descent into the canyon on a
zigzagging path. Cross the Río Colca via a bridge and enter the village of San Juan de Chuccho where accom-
modations are available at the Casa de Rivelino (r S10) with bungalows with warm water and a simple restaurant.
Alternatively, you can ascend to the charming village of Tapay where camping or overnight accommodations are
available at Hostal Isidro , whose owner is a guide and has a shop, satellite phone and rental mules. On day two
descend to the Cinkumayu Bridge before ascending to the villages of Coshñirwa and Malata . The latter has a
tiny Museo Familiar , basically a typical local home where the owner will explain about the Colca culture. From
Malata, descend to the beautiful Sangalle oasis (crossing the river again) with more overnight options before as-
cending the lung-stretching 4km trail back to Cabanaconde (1200m of ascent).
Though it's easy to do solo, this classic trek can be easily organized with any reputable Arequipa travel agency.
Tours & Guides
Local guides can also be hired by consulting with your hostel or the municipalidad in
Cabanaconde. The going rate for guides is S30 to S60 per day, depending on the type of
trek, season and size of the group. Renting a horse or mule, which is an excellent way to
carry water into the canyon and waste out, can be arranged easily for about S60 per day.
Sleeping & Eating
Accommodation options are limited in Cabanaconde. Most people eat where they're
sleeping, although there are a couple of cheap local restaurants near or on the main plaza.
